University of Leicester leaps up Guardian league table
University of Leicester placed 15th in UK
Issued 1 May
The University of Leicester has leapt up the rankings of a second national league table of British universities published today (May 1).
Leicester has climbed up five places to 15th in the UK out of 117 institutions in The Guardian league table.
This success follows last week’s Good University Guide, published in The Independent, which placed the University of Leicester top in the East Midlands at 12th.
The double delight for Leicester comes as the University marks its 50th anniversary as a University with thousands of people descending on campus on Saturday April 26 for Celebrate Leicester Day.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Burgess said the University of Leicester was counted amongst the leading universities in the UK.
“This is yet another terrific performance by staff and students at the University of Leicester which has resulted in us being counted amongst Britain’s leading universities. It says much about the character, confidence and ambition of the institution which is one that is always striving to achieve and to perform at the highest level.
“As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, it is fitting that we also achieve the highest league table rankings in our history. Successive league tables now prove without doubt that this University is among the country’s leading institutions.
“This is something in which the city, county and region can take enormous pride as such national recognition helps the University attract the best staff and students, all of which contributes to the local economy. I congratulate everyone for their commitment to excellence which league tables such as this clearly demonstrate.”
In the Guardian rankings, Leicester was placed ahead of Durham, Bristol, Nottingham, Birmingham, Sheffield, Manchester, Surrey and King’s amongst others. Loughborough and Leicester were the top two universities in the East Midlands.
The Guardian tables cover all full-time, undergraduate courses at higher education institutions in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and are aimed at those wanting to start university in the 2009-10 academic year. The tables are compiled, in association with EducationGuardian.co.uk, by Campus Pi, an applied research department at Brunel University.
