Snack food giant Walkers has warned that small pieces of rubber might be found in some packs of its crisps - the second such alert this year.
The Leicester company has promised to tighten its procedures to stop similar problems happening again in light of this latest incident.
The products affected are 25g bags of crisps with a best before date of 20/09/08 marked with the code GBL 2**182.
Anyone who has bought the crisps and discovered pieces of rubber is asked to contact the company for a refund.
The contaminated packets, which can be found in multipacks of 21 and 28 bags, include ready salted, cheese and onion, salt and vinegar, prawn cocktail, Worcester Sauce and barbecue rib flavours.
The company, which makes 11 million packets of crisps a day, has withdrawn the suspect batches from sale.
Environmental health officers from the city council are investigating after being told about the problem by company bosses.
City council food safety manager David Barclay Rhodes said: "Walkers notified us on Monday about small pieces of black rubber found in crisps by consumers.
"An investigation is under way and it is too early to say how it happened.
"The company has taken important steps already in withdrawing crisps which may be affected and notifying consumers of the incident and advising them what to do."
In February, Walkers was forced to recall packets of crisps after pieces of yellow rubber were found in some bags.
At that time, city council officers visited the Leycroft Road factory and "were satisfied that the company was taking reasonable precautions to prevent contamination of this type".
A Walkers spokesman said today: "The instances are unrelated and are extremely rare."
A helpline for refunds is available on 0800 274 777. |
