University bosses reveal concern over 'buying' places
Leicester University bosses say they would be very concerned if students from wealthy families were able to "buy" places.
Universities Minister David Willetts has confirmed the Government is looking at proposals to increase student numbers by allowing English universities to charge some British applicants.
They would pay the same fees as those paid by overseas students from outside the EU.
At Leicester University, this could be up to £24,000 depending on the course.
At present, universities are set a quota of undergraduate places and receive fines for exceeding it. But the move would allow universities to award "off-quota" places to those who were able to pay more.
Richard Taylor, Leicester University's director of corporate affairs and planning, said: "The fundamental principle is that selection by universities should be needs blind. A system that isn't and which allows students to be 'off quota' brings difficulties."
"Anything which gives students the opportunity to express an option less competitive because they come from a wealthy background, is concerning, although we would welcome a system that could be needs blind and allow growth in the sector so that greater numbers of poorer students could enter the system."
