Passengers watched in horror as a woman positioned herself on a station railway line.
The woman, described by witnesses as being in her early 20s, put down her bag on the platform and leaped on to the track as a train was approaching Leicester station at 2.30pm, yesterday.
The train had time to stop and the woman was removed by station staff and taken into custody by British Transport Police officers.
Eyewitness Christopher Craig, 36, of Enderby, said: "The first thing I saw was this dark-haired girl throwing her bag down.
"She then jumped on to the track and then sat down and started eating something.
"Luckily, they stopped the train well before it reached her."
A spokeswoman for East Midlands Trains said the incident caused a slight delay to the 2.35pm departure to London and the woman was removed from the station by police.
A spokeswoman for British Transport Police said: "We received a report on Friday of a female who was believed to have been on the tracks at Leicester Station.
