To coincide with a national ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaign, the University’s Volunteering Team arranged their own mass litter pick-up.
Volunteers keep Leicester tidy
On Wednesday, 15 June, 19 student volunteers tackled litter hotspots on and around the University’s campus, also covering areas of Victoria Park and along University Road.
After an hour of making a great effort to clean up their community, all the litter was weighed to determine who collected the most rubbish. The prize winner was Michael Lee, who collected over 4kg of rubbish in just one hour.
The national Big Tidy Up campaign was launched in 2008 to encourage people to tidy up their local communities and thousands of groups have been tidying up and collecting tonnes of rubbish from streets all across Britain.
Our Volunteering Team plans to hold more Big Tidy Up events in the new academic year so if you are interested in taking part please get in touch with Contact Student Volunteers atvolunteering@le.ac.uk.
Well done to all the student volunteers for improving their community and to Leicester City Council, the Environment Team and the Students’ Union for their support on the day.
