Case 1:
A resident of Great Britain (GB),
[ driving licence for a Car and or motorcycle, current driving licence issued Any other country (including China) ]

Can you drive in Great Britain (GB) if your driving licence was issued in another country?

Conclusion
you can drive in Great Britain (GB) on your full, valid driving licence for up to 12 months from the time you first became resident
you will need to stop driving once the 12 months are over
you will not be able to exchange your licence for a GB licence
if you wish to continue driving in GB you will need to get a GB provisional driving licence and sit a theory and practical driving test

Case 2:
A student in Great Britain (GB)

Can you drive in Great Britain (GB) if your driving licence was issued in another country?

Conclusion

Students from a community country
List of EC/EEA Countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom.
if you are a student holding a community licence you may drive cars and motorcycles in Great Britain (GB) for as long as your licence remains valid, or until age 70
if you do not hold a licence you must have been studying here for at least six months prior to taking a driving test or applying for a full licence

Students from a non-community country (学生来自非欧共体国家或地区)
List of designated countries(指定的国家或地区名单): Australia, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Falkland Islands, Faroe Islands, Hong Kong, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland and Zimbabwe.

1. if you are a student holding a non-community licence or an international driving permit you may drive here for up to 12 months
(如果你是一名持有非欧共体国家驾照或国际驾驶许可的学生，你可以在这里驾驶不超过12个月)

2. if you hold a driving licence from a designated country you may apply to exchange this for a British one up to five years after becoming a resident here
(如果你持有上述名单中指定的国家或地区的驾照，你可以申请用已持有的驾照在成为英国合法居民后的5年以内换取英国驾照)

3. if you do not hold a licence, or your licence was not issued in a designated country, you will need to apply for a provisional licence and then pass a driving test

A visitor to Great Britain (GB)

Can you drive in Great Britain (GB) if your driving licence was issued in another country?

Conclusion
Driving licences issued in Northern Ireland (NI) or an EC/EEA Country
List of EC/EEA Countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom.
you can drive any category of vehicle shown on your driving licence as long as it remains full and valid

Driving licences issued in Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man
you can drive any small vehicle eg cars and or motorcycles, shown on your driving licence, for a period of 12 months from the date that you last entered the country, as long as it remains full and valid
you can drive larger vehicles eg lorries and buses shown on your licence, whether British registered or registered outside of Great Britain (GB) that you have driven into the country

Driving licences issued in any other country (including China)

you can drive any small vehicle eg cars and or motorcycles, shown on your driving licence, for a period of 12 months from the date that you last entered the country, as long as it remains full and valid

you can only drive larger vehicles eg lorries and buses, shown on your licence, that have been registered outside of GB which you have driven into the country

根据以上三种情况，个人认为可以简单地归纳为以下三点：

1. 如果你是一名持有中国驾照的英国合法居民（学生、游客除外），你可以使用你的正式且在有效期内的驾照，从首次入境起的12个月内在英驾驶小型汽车；

2. 如果你是一名持有中国驾照（香港驾照除外）的留英学生，你需要先申请一个临时驾照，然后通过驾驶考试，才可以在英驾车；

3. 如果你是一名持有中国驾照的游客，你可以使用你的正式且在有效期内的中国驾照，从你最近一次入境起的12个月内，在英驾驶属于你驾照上标明的准驾车型的小型车(例如轿车、摩托车)；你只有在入境前注册且必须驾驶入境，才可以驾驶在你驾照上标明的属于准驾车型的大型车。

可是我为什么听我英国的朋友说，他们的中国驾照都换成香港驾照然后又换成了英国的驾照呢？

看了最后这三条，我的理解是，中国学生持大陆驾照在英国开车是不可以的。不知道这样理解对吗？楼主

看了Case 2 的第2条，就说明持有香港驾照的人在成为英国合法居民以后的5年之内可以申请换领英国驾照

如果是这样，那这么多拿中国驾照在这边开车的同学，一旦有什么事情需要走保险之类的，保险公司根本就不管啊！
违法开车，好危险！

对没有错，保险公司很多都是这样做，给你保险，等你出大事故时，他们自己会有一个资金付出评估，达到一定程度，他们会严格审查受保人的资料，如果有怀疑，他们会让受保人提供更确切的资料，如果提供虚假资料，例如：性别，年龄，驾驶执照类别.........等多项，都会使保险失效，严重者会坐牢。所以守法开车，保护他人，也是保护自己。
