Snow closes more than 100 schools

Monday, February 02, 2009, 09:30More than 100 schools across Leicestershire were shut this morning due to snow.
The county woke up to heavy snowfall and more is expected.
Some areas could be covered by up to 15cm of snow by tomorrow, forecasters have warned.
Temperatures, with a wind-chill, are expected to plummet to as low as -5C.
The Highways Agency's winter fleet of salt spreaders and snow ploughs have been at work to help ease conditions on the roads, with motorists being urged to drive slowly in the icy conditions.

say temperatures will struggle to get above freezing during the next few days.
Traffic bosses said roads in Leicestershire were quieter due to the closures, but there had been a few problems.
Driving conditions at the Catthorpe Interchange on the M6 and the A511 in Ashby, at the B587 Nottingham Road junction, are said to be "hazardous" due to the snow.

A bus also broke down in King Street, Enderby, this morning, causing problems for motorists.
Police in Melton reported several lorries had become stuck on hills, blocking roads.
Among the roads affected were the A6006 at Shoby, Asfordby Hill and Acres Rise, in Melton.
At Nether Broughton, an articulated lorry struggling to get up a hill forced other motorists to abandon their cars and walk.
Police also called county council gritters to Freeby Close, in Melton, after car owners reported their cars sliding down the hill.
Several road accidents were reported and icy conditions at Frisby Top were causing cars to go sideways, said police.
Despite the snowfall, officials at East Midlands Airport said there had been no problems early today.
East Midlands Trains also confirmed services were running as normal.
Both the AA and the Highways Agency are advising motorists to ensure they keep warm clothes in their cars after dealing with unprepared drivers at breakdowns during the last cold spell earlier this year, when temperatures in Leicestershire dropped as low as -8C.
AA spokesman Andy Taylor said: "If you break down on a motorway, the safety advice is to get out of the car and wait behind the barrier."
Mercury weatherman Dave Mutton said: "Today and tomorrow are going to be the worst. By tomorrow morning, we could see up to six inches (15cm) of snow."
