Statistics for Chinese Students
Unfortunately I could not find any statistics that said how many Chinese students gained graduate roles. However, below are some notes from a recent AGCAS Meeting that may be of use.
AGCAS Graduate Career Adviser’s Workshop on the Chinese Job Market What are Chinese (returnee) students saying….
The top advantages of having a UK qualification are:
* Increases creative ways of thinking.
* Increases global perspectives.
* Better experience of cross-cultural communication.
* More confidence in language ability.
* 95 % of China alumni have found a job within 6 months after their return to China – basically there are more jobs than graduates!!
* Top 3 expanding industries in China are: Business, IT and Media/comms advertising.
Perception of UK returning graduates: Strengths
* Cross cultural awareness
* Positive attitude and awareness.
* Teamwork spirit.
* Think and act more independently.
* Language: get more opportunities than peers (i.e. international conferences, overseas training/projects. More exposure with global leadership)
* Global view: better communication with foreigners, larger tolerance with cultural diversity (even in home country), proactive in seeking opportunities.
Perception of UK returning graduates: weaknesses/opportunities
* Not clear of own career path.
* Language (by itself) is not an advantage.
* Less aggressive than US returnee graduates.
* Less capability to handle pressure.
* Local customer needs – understand customers, their way of speaking.
* Build up relationships with local colleagues more, what they like, way of life etc.
* Local culture cannot be adapted.
* Challenging areas for recruitment areas are R&D and engineering.
* For advice on Chinese recruitment cycles – March/April is a good time to start looking in China for opportunities; June/July can be too late and then they’ll have to wait until the following cycle, if they leave it until summer and beyond.
* From Microsoft’s perspective, there is no expectation on UK Chinese returnees to have work experience, they look for potential. Encourage students to find out recruitment cycles for Chinese market via the internet. A good time frame for getting work experience is December, even if they go on vacation back home. 作者: louisa.wu 时间: 2013-1-2 23:09
