A Chinese restaurant ordered to shut after health inspectors found "hundreds" of mouse droppings has reopened.

Environmental health bosses said the owners of Flame, in Granby Street, Leicester, had "learnt their lesson" and had done their utmost to clean up food-preparation areas.

Inspectors shut down the restaurant last Thursday after finding serious risks to health and conditions described as "beyond disgusting".

Yesterday, a health inspector visited again, and said the area was now free of mice and the restaurant could reopen.

评论:老外反应两极化..

The fact that they got themselves into a mice infested situation in the first place, and failed to act on it without intervention from inspectors reflects their care and attitude towards customers. I will talk with my feet, and never step foot in that place.
K, Leicester

i certainly won't be eating there yuk!!
rachel, leicester

On the other hand, we know that currently this restaurant has been certified as clean. It might make sense to chose it over others that haven't been inspected as recently? Plus the staff are likely to be trying VERY hard at the moment to please...
Julie, Leicester

Will anyone ever eat in there after reading about the mice droppings and urine on every surface...I dont think so!!I doubt people will be saying 'oh look flames free of mice now, lets go there for dinner'! I think its awful that they have been allowed to re open so soon. The fine they received was 2 small & they shouldnt be allowed to run a restaurant again!
j, leics

How could anybody eat there again after managment allowed this filth in the first place
si, leicester

I wonder how many people will be back for seconds!!!

'BEYOND DISGUSTING' RESTAURANT IS SHUT

BY TOM BENNETT

10:30 - 05 February 2008

A Chinese restaurant has been ordered to shut indefinitely after city council officers found "hundreds" of mouse droppings throughout the kitchen.

Diners were asked to stop eating and leave the Flame restaurant, in Granby Street, Leicester, after environmental health officers, from Leicester City Council, found serious risks to human health in the kitchens.

Inspectors said the conditions were "beyond disgusting" after they discovered mice droppings caked into the corners of the walls and floors, sprinkled over bags of cooking flour, and in an open box of peanuts, during the inspection on Thursday evening.

A mouse even leapt out from inside a wok oven as officers peeked underneath in another visit yesterday morning.

Last night, magistrates granted the officers an order keeping the business closed until the premises meet required standards.

Magistrates also ordered the business to pay £1,216 in costs to the council.

Environmental health officer Su Clement said: "That was probably the second worst place I have inspected in 15 years of doing this. It was beyond disgusting.

"There was probably two inches of filth covering the floor, and there were mouse droppings and urine on every surface.

"When I went back this morning, I was checking under the wok cooker when a mouse leapt out and started running.

"Mice carry campylobacter, e.coli, and can cause Weil's disease.

"Obviously, the state of the restaurant presented an imminent risk to public health and had to be shut down. When we went in, there were nine people eating, who had to be asked to stop, and there were six tables booked.

"The manager had to ring them all and explain why their booking was being cancelled."

The manager of Flame must now write to the council to ask for an inspection when they believe the restaurant is up to scratch.

Environmental health officer David Howard said the new owner of the business had taken over in November, but was based in Essex and had not visited the restaurant. However, Mr Howard said, after the officers made the order, the owner had worked hard to clean the restaurant and exterminate all vermin.

He said: "The restaurant has previously had problems with mice, but they have never been in a food service area before. This shows that standards have really slipped over the past three months.

"Saying that, if you walked in now, you wouldn't recognise the place from the photographs we took at the inspection. They have put a lot of work in over the past few days.

"We're not looking to keep businesses shut indefinitely.

"Once they meet the standards, we'll let them open again."

Reader comments

I have to say I'm shocked to read the article I have eaten there many times and have always been impressed with the food. They should be heavily fined and not allowed to ever open a restaurant again. I feel quite ill thinking about it all.
Ruth, Leicestershire

In Amsterdam all the mice wear clogs, especially on the stairs
Pete, Leicester

Despite all the fuss, I would rather take my chance with ecoli etc than be realy ill and have a better than evens chance of contracting c-dif & the likes in one of our local hospitals. Why don't the environmental health officers concentrate on them & take them to court for the misery & death that they are getting away with? Did anyone die from eating at Flame?
C Kendrick, Quorn

I recently ate there and could not believe it when I heard about this, the interior itself was lovely and only goes to show what can be hidden behind closed doors.
Becky, groby leicester

David sums it up how on earth does it go on so long? maybe they shoudl up the license fee to restaurants and employ more inspectors Having a teenage son in catering, i would be very wary of eating out having heard the tales
mr wok, oakham

Elvis must go round eating bugs by the sound of it.Maybe he lives in a fest pit like Flames kitchen, thats why he's not to bothered about it!Its disgusting
Anon, Leic

Its the Year of the Rat!
Dee Pee, Leicester

ELVIS LIVES....!!! In a rat infested house by the sound of it.!!
Tom, Leicester

At least they found no rat droppings !
Pete, Leicester

Elvis, maybe your house should be inspected after those comments?
Tony, Leicester

The problem is people are too clean nowadays. A bit of exposure to bugs is good for the immune system.
Elvis Monckton, Ratby

Good grief I'm hungry. Can't wait until they reopen.
G, Leicester

Isn't there any form of certification with restaurants and eating places. The Council should not be under-staffed on matters where people's health are at risk. This particular situation has arisen overnight and my question is, why has is gone undetected for so long. All owners should be forced display a certificate of inspection placed alongside the menu in the window so the public can see when, at least, the premises were last inspected.
DavidHankey, Great Easton, Leics.

How discusting, I feel buisness's should be closed down for good once got into that state, I definitely won't be eating there again ever!
Tracey, Leicester

That will put a (ro)dent in their profits...
Mike Bistin, Lutterworth

I ate at this restaurant several times when in Leicesester and i now feel sick to the stomach. The restaurant should be closed for good. The fine it had to pay was ridiculously low!!! Make the owners eat one of the kitchen guests !!!
Trevor Gordon, Northampton

Cases like this put customers at serious risk - the penalty of £1,216, with the restaurant able to reopen when it's passed an inspection is ridiculous. The present system for inspecting and dealing with these establishments seems highly deficient.
Mike, Anstey

I tried to avoid Flame 'cos it was so flaming cheap...and now we know why!
Jonny A, Leicester

I ate at this restaurant the night before! The food was OK and I had no ill effects!!
Anon, Leicester

From the regular reports in the Mercury it would seem that eating out in Leicester or buying take aways is a hazardous pastime.
