情人節，又叫聖瓦倫丁節或聖華倫泰節（St. Valentine's Day），即每年的2月14日，是西方的傳統節日之一。男女在這一天互送巧克力、賀卡和花，用以表達愛意或友好。

關於情人節的起源，大致有2種不同說法：

說法一：

公元3世紀，羅馬帝國皇帝克勞迪烏斯二世在首都羅馬宣佈廢棄所有的婚姻承諾，當時是出於戰爭的考慮，使更多無所牽掛的男人可以走上爭戰的疆場。一名叫瓦侖廷（Sanctus Valentinus）的神父沒有遵照這個旨意而繼續為相愛的年輕人舉行教堂婚禮。事情被告發後，瓦侖廷神父先是被鞭打，然後被石頭擲打，最後在公元270年2月14日這天被送上了絞架被絞死。14世紀以後，人們就開始紀念這個日子。現在，中文譯為「情人節」的這個日子，在西方國家裡就被稱為Valentine's Day，用以紀念那位為情人做主而犧牲的神父。

與此相關的其他傳說，包括這位神父幫助天主教徒從羅馬監獄裡逃脫而被處死。

在這個神父在監獄裡時，據說他送出了第一個「情人節」祝福。據說他愛上了曾來監獄看望他，獄長失明的女兒亞斯得莉斯，並奇蹟地治好了她的眼睛，使之重見光明。在他臨刑前，給女孩一封信，署名「from your Valentine」（這個表達現在還在使用）。儘管這些傳說不真切，但是卻表達了他的富有同情心、英雄氣概、以及最重要的浪漫主義的人格。

說法二：

來源於古羅馬的牧神節（Lupercalia Festival）

這個說法是基督教會慶祝這一天是為了把古羅馬的牧神節（每年的2月15日慶祝，為了保佑人、田、牲畜的生產力）基督教化。在古羅馬，2月春天的開始，被認為是純潔的。按照一定的儀式打掃房屋，然後把鹽水和一種小麥灑遍房間。

牧神節，是為了慶祝羅馬的農神Faunus 和羅馬的奠基人羅穆盧斯和瑞摩斯。這個節日開始時，Luperci的成員（也就是羅馬祭司的一種）會聚集在一個神聖的山洞裡。這個山洞被認為是還是嬰兒的羅穆盧斯和瑞摩斯待過的地方。在這個洞裡，他們由一頭母狼，lupa，照料。祭司們會犧牲一頭羊，為了生殖；一隻狗，為了純潔。

然後男孩子會把羊的皮撕成小條，蘸上神聖的血後，跑到街上用它輕輕的抽打女人和田裡的莊稼。羅馬的女人不僅不會害怕，反而會樂意被羊皮條接觸，因為據說這樣她們在這一年裡就會生殖力旺盛。後來，根據傳說，這個城市所有的女人會把自己的名字放到一個花瓶裡。單身漢們會從裡面選一個。這樣這一年裡，他們就是一對。通常他們會結婚。

教宗在大約公元498年宣佈2月14日是情人節。羅馬人的這種婚配方式被基督教徒認為是不合法的。中世紀時，在英國和法國，通常認為2月14日是鳥交配的季節。因此就把此日增加了一個內容，那就是它應該是一個浪漫的日子。最早的情人節禮物是奧爾良的公爵，查理斯在倫敦塔獄中寫給他妻子的詩。因為他在阿金庫爾戰役中被俘虜了。現在這個寫於1415年的祝福被收藏在倫敦的大英博物館。幾年以後，英皇亨利五世雇John Lydgate寫了一首曲子給Catherine of Valois作為情人節禮物。

    * 情人節的晚餐約會通常代表了情侶關係的發展關鍵。
    * 各國家（地區）文化：

        * 美國：男性在這一天向他的女性朋友說「情人節快樂」已經沒有特別的感情關係，而逐漸演變為有如公開場合的打招呼的形式。但男性較少在公開場合對另一位男性如此打招呼。
        * 英國：從17世紀開始，情人節變得普遍。
        * 日本：女性送巧克力給她喜歡的男性，而男性則在一個月後的白色情人節（ホワイトデー，White Day）回禮表衷腸，這是日本商人於1965年炒作的結果。
        * 台灣：因受鄰近國家日本的影響，也慶祝這個節日，但與日本不同的是，在台灣卻是男生送女生禮物。另外，沒有交往對象的年輕男女也常選在這天向喜歡的人告白，情侶亦會特別在這天約會。
        * 中國大陸：改革開放後，隨著商業炒作的發展，不少年輕男女也開始慶祝這個節日。由於對「情人」一詞的不同理解（在大陸用語中，「情人」有時包含「情婦」、「情夫」，即合法婚姻以外的男女關係的意味），遭到一些非議。另一方面，由於擔心西方節日不斷湧入中國，沖淡了對中國傳統節日的慶祝，這一節日經常遭到保守人士的反對和抵制。直到現在，每年的這一時候，仍在媒體上有著類似評論。傳統人士一直希望從根本上用七夕節或元宵節取代情人節。
        * 香港：受到西方文化長期影響下，慶祝情人節已有多年歷史。男女會互贈禮物，男送女的標準禮物通常是鮮花、巧克力、首飾等，女送男的一般是手錶、領帶等男士服飾用品，並且常會到餐廳享用燭光晚餐。
        * 澳門：在情人節日，男送女鮮花，女則會送給男朱古力（巧克力）。男女情侶都非常重視這天的節日。

(Reuters) - Valentine's Day will stoke the embers of romance worldwide on Thursday.

Here are some key facts on the day and its origins.

* POSSIBLE ORIGINS

-- Although there were several Christian martyrs named Valentine, the day probably took its name from a priest who was martyred about AD 270 by the Roman emperor Claudius II Gothicus.

According to legend, the priest signed a letter to his jailer's daughter, with whom he had fallen in love, "from your Valentine."

-- The day may also have originated in the ancient Roman celebration of the Feast of Lupercalia in honour of Juno, the queen of the Roman gods and goddesses, on February 14. Juno was also the goddess of women and marriage so honoring her was thought to be a fertility rite.

-- At the feast held the next day, the women would write love-letters and stick them in a large urn. The men would pick a letter from the urn and for the next year, pursue the woman who wrote the chosen letter. This custom lasted centuries.

* THE FIRST CARDS

-- The custom of exchanging cards and other tokens of love on February 14 began to develop in England and France in the 14th and 15th centuries and became especially popular in the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries.

-- In England in 1477 Margery Brews sent a letter to her fiance, John Paston of Norfolk addressing him as "my right wele-belovyd Voluntyn".

-- In the United States the first commercially produced cards were manufactured by Robert H. Elton of New York in 1834.

* VALENTINE'S DAY EVENTS

-- Since 1994 couples have been married on the 80th floor of the Empire State Building.

-- In 2002 two male and six female elephants were married at a ceremony in the ancient Thai capital of Ayutthaya, though one pair just did what comes naturally. "It is rather tricky trying to stop a 16-year-old elephant groom from consummating his marriage before the ceremony," said one of the organizers.

-- In 2003 the Galeries Lafayette department store in Paris invited those seeking instant love to a marathon-dating session on February 13 for seven-minute tete-a-tetes with seven potential partners.

-- In 2006 hardline Hindu groups and radical Muslims burned Valentine's Day greeting cards and held protests across India against celebrating the festival of love, saying it was a Western import that spread immorality.
