UNIVERSITY OF LEICESTER ACHIEVES HIGHEST EVER NATIONAL LEAGUE TABLE RANKING IN ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR
University of Leicester ranked top in East Midlands and 12th in UK
The University of Leicester has claimed its place as the top ranked University in the East Midlands, reaching its highest ever ranking in The Good University Guide published today in The Independent.
In its 50th Anniversary year, the University of Leicester has been ranked 12th out of 113 universities –rising eight places from last year. This increase in eight places has moved Leicester above the universities of Aston, Royal Holloway, Edinburgh, Exeter, Bristol, Nottingham, Kings College London, Bath and Loughborough.
The authoritative table - the first to be published in a national newspaper in 2008, judges institutions on nine measures: student satisfaction, research assessment, entry standards, degree results, completion rates, job prospects, the student/staff ratio, spending on academic services, such as libraries, and spending on other facilities, such as careers and health services.
Lucy Hodges, from The Independent, said: “Other universities outside the golden triangle of Oxford, Cambridge, and London which have done well this year, improving their performance last year, include Durham (in sixth position) Lancaster (10th) and Leicester (12th position).”
Bernard Kingston, who compiled the league table, said this year’s table “consolidate[d] the position of Oxbridge, St Andrews, Leicester, Loughborough and Exeter as first class universities.”
Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Burgess, speaking ahead of the University’s major public celebration on Saturday April 26, said: “This achievement gives us great cause for celebration in our 50th Anniversary year and is a clear demonstration of the fact that Leicester is a high quality university that is really going places.
“We have been shortlisted as University of the Year for three consecutive years by the national media and are in the top 200 universities in world rankings. We are determined to build upon our many successes and you will not be surprised to learn that we intend to rise even higher in all the rankings.
“None of Leicester’s many achievements could have been attained without the dedication of its staff and this result is a testament to their commitment to realising the ambitious mission of this University. Our league table performance provides a national indicator of Leicester’s ongoing success and will enable us to continue attracting high quality staff and students to increase our position in future league tables.”
Graham Ross, Student Activities Officer in the Students’ Union, said: "The University of Leicester Students' Union is thrilled to see the excellence of the University shown in today's Good University Guide league table. Such a rise in the table reflects the improving reputation that Leicester is gaining and that it is now firmly one of the country's top Universities."
