£1,000 for naming the 'killer' of lost osprey
A £1,000 reward is being offered for information about the disappearance of an osprey from its nest near Rutland Water.
The male bird, known as 08, is feared shot after it went missing this month.
Following 08's disappearance, his mate, 5N, abandoned their nest.
Staff at Rutland Osprey Project are incubating a clutch of three eggs in the hope of finding a surrogate.
They offered the reward "for information leading to a conviction" in the hope of finding those responsible if 08 has been killed.
Project officer Tim Mackrill said: "We are hoping that someone may have information that will allow us to determine what has happened.
"The fact the female has abandoned the nest shows how unnatural it is for a male osprey to vanish at this point in the breeding season.
"We have to face the fact it is almost certainly dead.
"We are desperately hoping at least some of the chicks can be saved.
"We are keeping the eggs warm while we wait for the right time to put them into another osprey nest."
He said it was possible the bird was shot by a householder for taking fish from a pond.
He said people had donated £1,800 to the search for 08.
"We have been overwhelmed by the level of public interest," said Mr Mackrill.
The project has had some good news. The first chick to hatch this year – at a nest close to Lyndon Visitor Centre – was born on Monday.
Anyone with information about 08 should ring call police on 0116 222 2222 or the project team on 01572 737378. |
