Five killed as planes collide near Coventry
Five people have been killed in a mid-air collision between two light aircraft near Coventry.

The first plane came down near Coombe Abbey, Brinklow, five miles from Coventry Airport, at 11.42am, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

The second aircraft crashed in nearby Brandon Woods.

The pilot was the only person in the first plane and died on impact. Four people in the second aircraft, believed to be a Cessna 407, were also confirmed dead at the scene.

Murray MacGregor, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said crews had found "quite a scene of devastation".

"Thankfully nobody was nearby when the debris came down," he said.

The planes had crashed about a mile apart, spreading debris over a large distance and an air ambulance was needed to help locate the wreckage in the woods.

"Sadly there was nothing that could be done other than the grim task of confirming the deaths of the five people," Mr MacGregor added.

One line of inquiry for accident investigators will be the weather conditions at the time of the collision, he said.

The identity of the victims is not yet known.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service said the incident had happened opposite Coombe Abbey, a Grade I listed luxury hotel.
