Police stop cycling on pavements in Clarendon Park

Police working in the Clarendon Park area are clamping down on cycling on footpaths and pavements.
PC 6686 Hardip Singh Dayal is a member of the Clarendon Park neighbourhood beat team. He said: “During community consultation meetings I have had complaints about people cycling illegally on footpaths and pavements in Clarendon Park Road and Queens Road, Leicester. Some people have even been knocked over by cyclists. We intend to reduce complaints by working with cyclists to resolve this problem.”
The area is densely populated with a high percentage of cyclists, who find it a useful way to get into and out of the city area.
An advisory campaign to raise awareness on the subject will commence from July 4 to August 4, 2011 and leaflets will be distributed by the beat team. However anyone found cycling illegally may be issued with a non-endorsable fixed penalty notice at any time.
Sally Williams is a local resident and secretary of Leicester Disabled Peoples Access Group. She said: “I welcome this very good idea. Cycling on the pavement is becoming a real problem in the area, and some cyclists don’t consider the feelings of older and vulnerable people, who have a fear of falling.”
