FREE SWIM FOR VISITORS TO CITY POOLS
10:30 - 22 August 2008
Swimmers can make a splash free at any city council-run swimming pools to celebrate Team GB's Olympic success.
Free swimming will be available to all visitors to any Leicester City Council leisure centre on Sunday, from opening time until 2pm.
The move is to celebrate Mansfield swimmer Rebecca Adlington's double gold medal win in the Beijing Olympics, and to encourage new people to participate in the sport.
The teenager, who is taking part in her first Olympics, became the first woman to win a British swimming gold medal for nearly 50 years.
Council organisers hope budding swimmers from across the city will continue the celebrations by joining thousands of other fans taking part in the Sports Fest events in Leicester city centre tomorrow and on Sunday.
The weekend of events will culminate in the ceremonial handover of the Olympic torch from Beijing to London, ahead of the 2012 games, shown on the specially-erected big screen in Humberstone Gate on Sunday. People will also be able to watch the raising of the Olympic flag in Leicester, and take part in the Sing The Nation event, which will unite choirs and community groups from the city.
Leicester City Council's Olympic envoy, Councillor Rory Palmer, said: "This has been a great Olympics for Team GB.
"I know everyone in Leicester will want to join me in congratulating all our medal winners.
"This free swim offer on Sunday is a great way to celebrate our Olympic success. Getting more people to do exercise and sport is one of our top aims for the 2012 Olympic legacy.
"This is the perfect way to kick off Leicester's 2012 celebrations and start the journey towards the Special Olympics in Leicester in 2009.
"I would encourage everyone to join in the fun and celebrate the magic of the Olympics."
Free swimming will be available at Leicester Leys in Beaumont Leys, Braunstone Leisure Centre, Evington Leisure Centre, Cossington Street Leisure Centre in Belgrave, and Aylestone Leisure Centre. |
