POLICE TO GIVE HOUSEHOLDERS SECURITY TIPS
Police have visited 600 properties to warn people to improve their home security and to be on the look-out for burglars.
Officers visited people at home in Clarendon Park, Leicester, on two evenings last week after a spate of break-ins.
Undercover officers were also out on patrol, and arrested one suspect.
A total of 94 burglaries were reported in the Clarendon Park area between April and December 2007, with 16 in December alone. In the same nine-month period a year earlier, 33 homes were hit.
Police say many of the break-ins in the area, which has a high number of rented and student homes, could have been prevented if people were more security-conscious.
Inspector Richard Toone, commander of Welford Road police station, said: "It's one thing to drop a leaflet through people's letterboxes, but we wanted to speak to people face-to-face where possible."
The undercover operation will continue for the next few weeks, Insp Toone said.
He said: "In the main this is a student issue and in a lot of cases their homes are not as secure as others.
"We would urge people to think seriously about their home security and to mark their property and record any serial numbers."
Overall, burglary rates across the city have remained stable with 1,744 crimes recorded in the past nine months. |
