CUSTOMERS LOSE OUT ON MOBILE DEAL
10:30 - 21 February 2008
Hundreds of people have complained to the city council after losing money on mobile phone deals.
Customers signed up to deals which appeared to offer them most, if not all, of their cash back.
Some people paid out hundreds of pounds a month on expensive phone packages and did not get their money back.
Two of the firms offering cash-back deals have stopped trading - potentially owing customers thousands of pounds.
More than 1,000 people have contacted Leicester City Council's trading standards service to complain.
Trading standards manager Ronald Ruddock's advice is to street well clear of deals like these.
He said: "After so many failures of companies offering high-value cash-back deals, we do not believe that most of the advertised deals are viable.
"The advice is this - if you can't afford the monthly contract without the cash back, you should steer clear of the offer.
"We would also like to see more checks being carried out by the airtime providers, as they have a duty not to expose their customers to risk."
One company, Letz Talk, which attracted 90 complaints, closed its two shops in Evington in December.
Ultimate Biles, of Green Lane Road, Leicester, also closed down after raids by police and trading standards officers.
The full amount the stores owe is not yet known.
Trading standards officers are urging customers who have fallen foul of cash back deals to get in touch.
