Officers investigating the death of a 56-year-old woman struck by a high-speed train have said they are not treating the incident as suspicious.
The fatal incident happened shortly after 4.20pm on Wednesday on the railway line between Kibworth Beauchamp and East Langton.
Witnesses working nearby said they saw the woman, who British Transport Police have confirmed as being from the King's Norton area of Leicestershire, climb on to the railway track carrying cans of alcohol.
This was moments before she was hit by the high-speed 3.30pm East Midlands Trains service from Nottingham to London St Pancras.
Formal identification took place yesterday and the next of kin have been informed.
A spokeswoman for the British Transport Police said: "We received a report at 16.23 from a member of rail staff that a train had struck a woman near Market Harborough rail station.
"Officers from British Transport Police and paramedics attended and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
"The body was later taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
"We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and we are preparing a file for the coroner, but we are not treating it as suspicious." |
