It's no joke as 'Mickey Mouse' is hit with £1,100 penalty over distribution of flyers

A nightclub promoter has been ordered to pay out almost £1,100 for handing out flyers illegally.

Shiraz Bhatti, of King Street, Leicester, initially gave his name as Mickey Mouse when he was caught by city wardens, Leicester Magistrates' Court heard.

However, he gave his correct name and address when he was spotted again two days later, and pleaded guilty to a series of offences relating to distributing flyers and leaflets for nightclubs, including Life and Liquid.

The court heard how Bhatti, company director of Club Promotions Ltd, had been distributing flyers during fresher's week at De Montfort University last year.

Wardens first approached him, in Mill Lane, on September 28.

He initially attempted to get a fine, which had been issued to a member of his staff earlier that day, to be transferred to him.

The court was told that shortly afterwards, when the wardens picked up a flyer to use as evidence, Bhatti snatched it back and said it was his property. When the wardens attempted to fine him, he gave his name as Mickey Mouse and walked off.

Two days later, Bhatti was again spotted in Mill Lane. This time, the city warden was accompanied by a police officer and Bhatti gave his correct name and address.

The court heard Bhatti apologised for failing to provide the details previously, saying he had been frustrated that the fine issued to a member of his staff could not retrospectively be altered into his name, so he could "fight it in court".

Bhatti, who did not attend court and made his guilty plea by post, was fined £300 for the offence of distributing printed matter, plus £300 for the offence of causing another person to do so. In addition, he was fined £100 for failing to give his name and address.

He was also ordered to pay £377 prosecution costs and a £15 victim surcharge, making a total of £1,092.

Leicester City Council made the city centre, Braunstone Gate and part of Belgrave Gate "no distribution zones" in September 2008.

The council's warden team manager, Barbara Whitcombe, said: "This is a good result and will hopefully deter other promoters from handing out flyers illegally."

De Montfort University also welcomed the sentence.
